The skin barrier is the skin’s outermost layer, also called the epidermis. The very top layer of the skin barrier is called the stratum corneum and is comprised of flattened cells that are bound together by a lipid matrix. The lipid matrix is a precise combination of fatty acids, ceramides and cholesterol. This combination is necessary to maintain the strength and integrity of the stratum corneum – the top layer of the skin.
